Just doing my bit to keep the world economy going. Having decided not to upgrade my 'puter (seeing as how mine actually does what I want it to, well after I upgrade the HDD) I had to think about what needed upgrading next. TV? Bit too much. Amp, no. iPod Touch, no. PS3, well maybe the old HDD from my laptop can go in when I upgrade it. Haircut, done.

Headphones? YES! I'm using cheapo headphones that I can't remember buying any more! Upgrade time!

Little Big Planet Difference Engine / 8bit calculator

The man has made a mechanical calculator using a PS3 game and a Dualshock control pad! This must have taken ages. The first part of the video shows that it works but it's only when you get to see the behind the scenes design that the magnitude of this project kicks in. It might not be as difficult as physically making a mechanical calculator with hand cast cogs but it comes a close second... VIDEO

New Mersenne prime discovered (?)

Mersenne numbers are of the form 2ⁿ – 1. Mersenne primes are also prime numbers. They are getting very big. The last one found was 2^32,582,657-1. The 45th might be 'big'. In fact, it will take a couple of weeks to confirm that it's prime. [Via El Reg]

Get some Dave in your life

Went to ikea and bought a 'Dave' table for my laptop. 15 quid, bargain. Height is adjustable and top has a flat and angled setting. There is a handle hold at the back which you can also feed through cables, mine all come from the side so limited use for me. Very comfy for sofa surfing, Also in white + blue. The blue was tempting...

Tired of all that GSM buzz coming from your cellphone when all you wan to do is listen to music? The guys at MacLife have re-uncovered a simple fix that involves parts that you probably have laying around in your spaghetti drawer. Just grab some ferrite beads -- the same ones that often ship with TVs and USB cables -- and attach them to your speaker cables near the speakers. This is probably not a shock to those of you who already know a thing or two about magnetic interference, but for the rest of you, get scouting and grab some tape.
